Classic white Sancerre with aromas of white flowers, lemon, pear and gooseberries. On the palate good roundness with a vibrant, refreshing acidity and peppery minerals adding to the complexity. The wines from the cooler northern edge of the Sancerre appellation do not have the same stylist fatness as those from the southern villages like Bué and Sancerre itself. On the other hand, they have a steely character of great purity and immense charm … perhaps the most Chablis like of the Sancerre wines. When young the acidity of it is capable of compensating the fatness of dishes like ‘rillettes’, smoked salmon, eel, herring or haddock. This romatic wine goes well too with the strong flavours of asparagus and wild oysters. When riper : poached river fish such as char, pikeperch and trout. Caviar. Very classic combination with ‘crottins’ or other goat’s cheeses.
Domaine du Nozay is a relatively young viticultural domaine. Although the plantation of vines only began in 1971, the imposing Château dates from the 17th century and parts of the basement even date back to the 13th century. The size of the vineyard was gradually built up and now constitutes 10 Hectares. Philippe has another 10 Hectares of land but, unfortunately, new plantations are forbidden by the existing appellation laws. The domaine is kept a haven for peace and tranquillity, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life … the wines made here distinctly reflect this way of life. The vineyard is very much a family affair, with Philippe in charge of the cellar work, his wife Marie-Hélène taking care of the administration and their son Cyril responsible for the vineyard.
